What happens after an interview?

Want to know what happens after an interview?

From employers making a decision to the next steps in the application, here is a look at everything that takes place after your interview finishes.

A decision will be made

Employers should let you know when they will be in touch following an interview. They might say how many other candidates they have to speak to or give you an exact date when you will find out.

You can always ask for more details in the interview itself to help you manage expectations.

It might take a few days to hear back until all interviews have been completed or you could hear the same day. Try to be patient and if you have not heard back in that timeframe, give the employer a call.

If you are unsuccessful

Rejections are a normal part of the job search. Maybe another candidate had more relevant experience – or maybe you were the one who decided the role was not right for you.

Either way, have confidence that you were invited to an interview. It means you have a strong CV and cover letter.

You will usually get feedback on why you were not chosen, so take this on board for future applications. Practice some interview questions or think of different examples to showcase your skills.

If you get the job

Congratulations! Your job search is over, and you are ready to start the next chapter in your career.

Your employer will explain what the next steps will be. This will usually include filling in some paperwork and showing them your ID.

The job offer will usually include specific details about the job, including:

  • Start date and hours of work
  • Salary and how often you are paid
  • Where to go on your first day.

Always ask your employer if you need any additional information on anything.

Now you know what happens after an interview

You will probably feel excited to find a job – but it can be daunting too. Speak to your advisor if you are on benefits as they can advise whether your entitlement will change. They can also help you with any questions or uncertainties you may have.

And if your job search continues, stay positive and keep going! That new role is just around the corner.
