Warehousing jobs offer great flexibility and variety. With lots of potential to work your way up in the industry, you will have many opportunities to learn valuable skills. 

You might work in a warehouse which receives and stores goods, or in a distribution centre, which both stores and delivers items. 

   

What are the different warehousing roles? 

The warehousing industry is varied, so there are many warehousing jobs you can work in: 

 

Freight clerk 

Working as a freight clerk is a good way to get started in warehousing. Freight clerks check manifests and invoices, arrange shipping, and control inventory. 

You will have good organisation skills, as you will be managing files and records. 

 

Warehouse operative 

As a warehouse operative, you will take on many different duties. These might include unloading and packing stock, picking and packing orders, and stock counting. 

Motivation is essential, as you will often be working without supervision to meet quotas or deadlines. 

 

Warehouse quality auditor 

Warehouse quality auditors make sure that products and packaging meet the required levels of quality. You will check products, identify damaged goods, and take stock. 

This is a role where attention to detail is important, as you will need to spot small defects and damage. 

   

What skills do you need to work in warehousing? 

  • Reliable – you may need to work without supervision, so you will need to work independently 
  • Good physical fitness – you will be on your feet for most of the day, and you may need to move heavy objects 
  • Safety-conscious – you will need to take safety guidelines seriously, as warehouses can be dangerous environments 
  • Flexibility – many warehousing jobs are shift-based, so you should be flexible in your working hours 
  • Teamwork – you will often work as part of a team, so you will need good communication skills.
