Home Icon

Hospitality jobs involve supporting customers. This could be at a hotel reception, in a restaurant, as part of a customer service desk, or somewhere completely different.

You will need to be friendly and approachable, with good customer service skills. Hospitality jobs can offer a lot of opportunities for progression into other roles and industries, so they are a good way to gain experience.

The hospitality sector

Hospitality jobs fall into four different categories:

  • Accommodation – supporting customers in hotels, youth hostels, camp sites and other places they are staying
  • Food and beverage – preparing, presenting and serving food and drinks in restaurants, cafés and other dining spots
  • Travel and tourism – looking after and providing information to customers who are traveling or on holiday
  • Recreation – working with customers in places like cinemas, casinos or activity centres.

What are the different hospitality roles?

There are a wide variety of hospitality jobs available:

Receptionist

As a receptionist, you could be working on a front desk – like a hotel, casino or leisure centre. You will be answering phone calls, greeting customers, and handling check-ins.

Receptionists are the first point of call for customers, so you will need good customer service skills and a positive attitude.

Porter

Porters work in hotels, hostels and other hospitality establishments. You will help carry luggage for guests, fix minor issues (like changing light bulbs or vacuuming carpets) and perform other small tasks.

Porters need a good level of physical fitness and strong communication skills.

Catering assistant

Catering assistants support chefs with serving and preparing food. You will help prepare ingredients, set tables and help clean the kitchen.

Catering assistants need good attention to detail and a basic knowledge of food preparation.

What skills do you need to work in hospitality?

  • Customer service – you will need to be friendly, patient and able to talk to customers
  • Communication skills – hospitality jobs often require you to work well as part of a team
  • Time management – you may be working in busy environments
  • Patience – it is important to remain calm and friendly, even under pressure
  • Multi-tasking – you may need to concentrate on several tasks at the same time.
