Planning for your first day at work

Your first day at work is an exciting time – but you will probably feel nervous too. Planning what you need to do and getting organised will prevent some of this anxiety.

Here are our top tips to get ready for your first day.

The week before your first day at work

It is important to get organised in advance and not leave everything until the night before. This will help you feel in control – and make sure you have not forgotten to do anything.

  • Check what you need to bring – employers usually need to see ID on your first day, like a passport or birth certificate
  • Fill in those forms – complete any paperwork you are sent in advance
  • Familiarise yourself with the company – take another look at the website or job advert to refresh your memory
  • Make a list of questions – put down anything you are unsure about or want to learn more on
  • Plan your journey in advance – make sure you know what time you start and where you are going.

Complete one task each night to help you feel more organised each day.

The night before

The night before your interview is a great time to get those last-minute jobs done. You do not want to give yourself too many things to do on the day.

  • Plan your outfit – choose your interview clothes and make sure they are washed and ironed
  • Set an alarm – make sure you have enough time to get ready and leave early
  • Pack those snacks – taking a healthy snack like a banana can be useful for the journey and you will need a bottle of water to take in with you
  • Make a note of your employer’s number – just in case something slows your journey to the workplace
  • Think of some ice-breaker questions – ease your nerves by thinking of a few questions to ask your new colleagues.

It is important to look after yourself and get some rest too. Eat well, do something that helps you relax and get an early night.

On your first day at work

You might feel daunted as you approach the doors, but your new team will help you feel settled.

  • Pack your bag – with your ID, notes, snacks and any personal items you need
  • Remember why you are there – you were chosen as the best person for the job, so that should give you confidence
  • Start some small talk – say hello to new people and introduce yourself. It will get easier the more you do it.

And finally – enjoy yourself! Your job search is over, and you are ready to start a new chapter. Make the most of your first day and get ready for all the new opportunities you will have.
