How your employer can help
As part of the Equality Act, employers must make reasonable adjustments to make sure disabled workers are not disadvantaged when doing their jobs.
This includes:
- Making physical changes, like a ramp for a wheelchair user or a visual fire alarm for a deaf person
- Letting a wheelchair user work on the ground floor
- Changing equipment so it is easier to use eg. a special keyboard for someone with arthritis
- Allowing employees who become disabled to make a gradual return to work, including flexible or part-time hours.
You can get advice on reasonable adjustments from Jobcentre Plus, or the Disability Employment Service if you’re in Northern Ireland, such as:
- Personal development
- Working with others
- Managing your money
- Career planning
- Confidence in work.
