Speculative letters
A speculative letter is used to write to employers asking if they have any vacancies.
By sending an employer your CV and a speculative letter, you could be lucky if suitable positions are available, or the company may keep your details on file for future vacancies. This can increase your chances of finding a suitable job.
Here are some useful tips:
- Phone the company and ask the name of the person who deals with recruitment
- Send your letter to that person with brief details of your current position, the types of jobs you are looking for, key skills and any relevant work experience
- Offer a brief snapshot of what interests you about the company. You will need to do your research first. Have a look at the company’s website and learn what you can about them
- End your cover letter on a positive note; “I’m looking forward to your reply.”. You could even say; “I will call you next week to discuss this further.”
