How to meet deadlines at work

Do you struggle to meet deadlines at work?

It can be hard to get tasks and projects done on time – and that can make us feel anxious and stressed at work. But there are things you can do to deal with deadline anxiety and feel more organised in the workplace.

The importance of organisation

People who meet deadlines regularly have one thing in common – good organisation.

Being organised and planning priorities helps you manage your workload and stay on track. This could be as simple as making a list of the tasks you need to complete and the deadline for each – or you could use spreadsheets or colour-coding instead.

It is a good idea to break down larger tasks into smaller steps and tick each one off once completed. This will make projects feel more manageable and will help you keep track of progress.

Minimise distractions

Whether you work from home or in a workplace environment, many of us are easily distracted. This can make it difficult to focus – especially if you have a deadline.

Make sure your workspace is comfortable and has everything you need to complete your work. Try blocking out time where you turn off notifications. You should also let your colleagues know if you are busy to make sure they do not bother you.

This does not have to be the entire day – it could be an hour each morning or a few hours in the afternoon. Without distractions, it will be easier for you to focus.

Ask for help when you need it

There is nothing wrong with asking a colleague or your manager for help. Explain how much work you have finished and how much there is left to do.

You can also explain what problems are causing you to run behind. Decide how much of the remaining work you can finish on your own, and how much you will need someone else’s help with.

Remember to be realistic. Do not promise more than you think you can do, even if you want to make a good impression.

You can meet deadlines

With a little organisation and support, you can meet deadlines. Understand what helps you work at your best and be realistic about taking on new projects.

And remember – it is always better to ask for help than struggle in silence.
