How to get a job with no experience

Home Icon

It might seem impossible to get a job with no experience. CVs are often overlooked or rejected if they do not have relevant work history or qualifications – especially for competitive roles.

Whether you are looking for your first role or want to move into a new sector, here are our tips to get your application noticed.

Find an entry-level role

Entry-level jobs are a great way to start your career. Many of them offer apprenticeships or qualifications you take while working, so you can gain the skills you need quickly.

They can be competitive to get – so it is useful to understand the skills you need for that role before you apply. That way you can see which qualities you already have and which you need to develop.

Get experience by volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to add experience to your CV – and it is often easier to be hired as a volunteer than an employee. You do not need to have previously worked in the sector or have a specific qualification.

Not only does volunteering give you extra experience, but it also shows you are serious about your chosen industry – and have invested the time and effort to contribute to it.

It is also a great option for people who are short on time. Volunteer in the evening or at the weekend, so you can fit it around other commitments.

The power of networking

Sometimes knowing the right people can help you find the right job.

Industry networking is a great way to meet people who can either refer you to jobs that are recruiting or let you know about new opportunities.

You can do this by attending networking events or using LinkedIn and Facebook to meet people online.

Build your skills

Training courses can help you improve your skills and give you useful qualifications that make your CV stand out.

Not only do training courses help build your skills, they also may offer hands-on experience and opportunities to network.

Training can be provided online, as well as by local colleges and universities, training bodies and organisations. Sometimes it is free or can be taken at a reduced cost.

You can get a job with no experience

Finding a job without experience may seem like a challenge, but it is not impossible.

With patience and dedication, you can create a CV that catches the eye of employers.
