How finding work can improve your wellbeing

Finding work is a great way to improve your wellbeing.

You will meet new people, get more active and learn different skills – all while easing financial pressures.

Here are some ways finding work can help you feel happier and healthier.

Physical wellbeing

Walking or cycling to and from work is a simple way to add exercise to your day. If this is not possible, you can still walk part of the journey, get off the bus early or park your car further away.

You can get active in the workplace too – especially if you are a manual worker. Use the stairs instead of the lift, take a longer route to your desk or move around in between meetings.

And why not head outside during your lunch break? Find a local walk and have a wander nearby.

Mental wellbeing

Job searches, interviews and rejections can be stressful and may affect your mental health.

When you get a job offer, it will ease that anxiety and pressure. It will also boost your confidence and self-esteem. Your new employer thinks you are the best candidate for the role – that should make you proud.

But we know work can be stressful too. That is why mental health support is available to help you stay well in the workplace – at no cost to you.

Emotional wellbeing

Finding a job can improve feelings of uncertainty and hopelessness that you might experience during your job search. You will feel happier and calmer knowing you have found work – and it will bring structure to your day.

This can help you to feel more optimistic about the future. You will have new processes to learn, new skills to develop and new people to meet – and you can find out about career progression too.

Social wellbeing

Work will give you a reason to leave the house, which can reduce the risk of loneliness.

You will meet new colleagues, customers or clients, giving you different people to talk to during the day. Something as simple as a little small talk can have a huge impact on your social wellbeing.

And if you work from home, chatting to your team through email, chat or in virtual meetings are important ways to stay in touch.

Financial wellbeing

Of course, finding work will improve your financial wellbeing. Payslips and regular paydays can ease financial pressures and help you pay bills.

For jobs with a regular income, you will also be able to plan ahead. You will know when money will be coming into your account and the best days to pay any bills or outgoings.

Improving your financial security can also give you the confidence to treat someone you love – or just reward yourself with something!
