Looking for some top interview tips? Getting invited to an interview is a huge step towards finding a job – and you are bound to feel a mixture of excitement and nerves.

Here are some things to do before the big day – and ways to relax when you walk into the interview room.

Research the company

Finding out more about the company helps you understand who they are and what they do – and it also proves you are serious about wanting to work for them.

Have a quick look at the company’s website to find out key details like:

  • When the company was founded
  • Important events and moments in their history
  • Which countries they operate in
  • The company’s values – see where your own ideas and beliefs align with them.

And why not check out their social media? You could even follow them to show you are keen.

Know the role – and yourself

Matching your skills and experience to the job role will be the main part of the interview, so it is important to understand what will be expected of you – and what you can bring to the company.

Print out the job description and check your experience against it, as well as areas where you might need more training.

You should also research common interview questions and make a few notes for each one. Answers do not need to be rehearsed, but it is important to plan examples in advance.

Dress to impress

The clothes you wear and the way you present yourself are very important in an interview – even if you meet your interviewers online.

Arrive feeling refreshed and make sure your nails are clean – crucial for handshakes. Smart clothes are a must, even if you are applying for a manual job.

And once it is time to walk into the interview room, hold your head high, keep a good posture and maintain eye contact with your interviewer – you will immediately feel more confident.

Plan your journey

Plan your route in advance, as well as alternate ways of getting there – just in case. You could even do a practice run.

Google Maps and other journey planning apps will help you find the quickest route – providing real-time updates on anything that might slow you down. It is also a useful way to see what the building looks like and where the entrance is.

And always make sure you turn up 10-15 minutes early. It will give you a moment to catch your breath, recheck your notes and walk through the door calmly.

Interview them!

Interviews are not just to make sure you are right for the role – but to make sure the company is right for you too.

If you have any questions about the job role, ask them during the interview. Find out what the interviewer loves about their job, as well as any challenges they have faced at work.
