A partnership between Remploy, Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and the children’s charity Barnardo’s is boosting apprenticeship opportunities for young people from all backgrounds.
"The really good thing is that you are earning while you are learning!”
Nicole Hird from Dundee secured her apprenticeship at McIntyre’s salon in the city, thanks to support from her local Remploy branch.
Nicole has a long-term kidney condition, but she has never let her health condition stand in the way of her ambition to become a top stylist. She was referred to Remploy who worked with McIntyre’s to pave the way for a successful and fulfilling apprenticeship.
A grateful Nicole said: “I’ve had a lot of help from Remploy and colleagues at McIntyre’s. In my opinion, if someone wants to do a modern apprenticeship they should definitely go for it. It helps you gain confidence and build experience by learning from people who have been in work for some time. The really good thing is that you are earning while you are learning!”
Matthew Lancashire, Remploy’s director of business development (Scotland) said: “The partnership between Remploy, SDS and Barnardo’s has been a resounding success. It has ensured that more young disabled people have had the opportunity to access the Scottish Government's modern apprenticeship scheme and contribute to Scottish businesses and grow the economy.
Remploy is dedicated to supporting disabled people into sustainable employment and welcomes the fact that the Scottish Government shares this aim. We look forward to delivering further successes via the project over the coming years.”
Karen Murray, SDS head of national training programmes development added: “We know that some groups, including those with additional support needs, are under-represented in terms of employment in modern apprenticeships programmes and we are committed to improving access to all national training programmes. That commitment is one of the reasons we have been working with Remploy and Barnardo’s.”
