Supported internships

The supported internships scheme helps young people aged 16 to 24 with complex learning difficulties or disabilities to find work.

Study programmes include on-the-job training with expert coaches responsible for supporting both interns and their employers. Programmes can also give interns the opportunity to take courses to develop other relevant skills, such as effective communication or understanding money.

How does it work?

  • Delivered over the course of an academic school year usually starting in September
  • For groups of 10 – 12 learners
  • Flexible delivery model with most of the time spent at the employer’s premises
  • Individuals learn the role with the support of robust job coaching utilising Training in Systematic Instruction (TSI)
  • Includes English and Maths
  • Provides an appropriate placement for both the employer and the intern
  • The goal is for the young person to gain employment
  • Whilst not a requirement, where possible the host employer should have a job available at the end of the placement, if the intern meets their requirements
  • Remploy provide an embedded advisor who will deliver TSI based job coaching
  • A local college provide learning support and funding.

Benefits to the employer

  • Acts as an extended working interview giving an increased chance of getting the right person
  • Interns may have skills currently lacking in existing staff. For example, high-functioning autism can result in young people having significantly above-average accuracy
  • Money-saving opportunity due to job carving etc.
  • Increased workforce diversity, reflecting the communities it serves
  • Increases disability awareness and confidence:
    • Disability awareness training for staff provided by Remploy
    • Potential supervisory or mentoring opportunities for existing staff
    • Helps achieve equality and diversity targets.
