Remploy celebrate finding jobs for more than 100,000 disabled and disadvantaged people since 2010.

December 3 is International Day of Disabled People when Remploy  celebrated finding jobs for more than 100,000 disabled and disadvantaged people since 2010.

The milestone was achieved when Faraz Malik, from Selly Oak landed a job as a cleaning operative with City Facilities Management, the company contracted to clean ASDA stores across the UK.

Faraz, aged 25, who has Asperger’s syndrome, is now a valued member of the 30-strong cleaning team at ASDA’s Supercentre in Minworth, near Sutton Coldfield – the third largest Asda store in the country - and loving every minute of his important new role.

A martial arts fanatic and former county chess champion, Faraz has a zest for life and all it has to offer. But even he was finding it hard to stay positive and keep a smile on his face when his attempts to find a job kept hitting a brick wall.

“I left university with a degree in Environmental Health but finding a job that was right for me was a big problem,” he explained. “Not having work was terrible. I spent far too much time at home watching daytime TV”.

Things started to look up when he was referred to Remploy’s Birmingham branch for specialist help with his job searching. At the branch he received tailored one-to-one support, including confidence building, advice on how to build a standout CV and looking for jobs online.

Said Faraz: “The most important thing was that Remploy took the time to find out what I wanted to do and didn’t push me into applying for jobs, regardless of whether they were suitable or not. I’m sure that without their help I wouldn’t have this job now.”

Darren Ward, cleaning manager at the Minworth store added: “I’m delighted with the progress Faraz is making. He is keen to learn and wants to get on, key qualities that both City Facilities Management and ASDA look for in their employees.

Beth Carruthers, Remploy Chief Executive, said: “Achieving this remarkable milestone is testament to the strong relationships we have with employers large and small who recognise the business benefits of employing disabled people.

“Every day we see disabled people using their ability to deliver services, produce goods and help businesses to meet their goals.  Every day we hear from employers about the difference that employing disabled people makes.

IDDP is a day to celebrate the talents and achievements of disabled people.  It promotes ability and showcases what is possible in order to break down barriers through increased understanding. 

“IDDP is also an opportunity to challenge ourselves and others to do more to create an inclusive society and workplaces that truly benefit from the ability of all of our citizens,” Beth Carruthers said.
