A young Edinburgh man’s passion for sport has helped him overcome disabilities and secure his dream job working in a leisure centre.
Amer Ali, aged 18 from Portobello, Edinburgh, joined the ‘2 your future’ vocational coaching course run by Edinburgh Leisure with support from Remploy, the leading provider of specialist employment services for disabled people and those with health conditions.
Employment advisors at the Remploy branch in Earl Grey Street recognised his great passion for sport and helped him to secure a place on the course.
Although Amer , who has dyspraxia and dyslexia, had worked in a pub and been on various work experience programmes, he lacked confidence. At school he was discouraged from pursuing his dream career after being told by teachers that there was “too much competition out there” and he presumed that he could not compete in the job market because of his disabilities.
Amer said that this left him feeling let down and “without direction.” But he impressed the team at Edinburgh Leisure so much that they decided to offer him the role of Leisure Assistant and Lifeguard following his placement at their Ainslie Park leisure centre.
Remploy supported him with securing a lifeguarding qualification. “The 2 your future course really helped me and gave me a big boost in confidence. I have learned so much and now get to work in a job that I love. I am now going to have structure, a career with a sense of purpose and financial stability.”
Jack Martin, Project Development Officer at Edinburgh Leisure, said: “I work with many young people who are at a similar stage to Amer. However, I have never met a young person who is so willing to give up their own time for others. The transformation I have seen in him is inspiring.”
With his new source of income and confidence, Amer plans to further his career in the sports and leisure industry and also plans to learn to drive. “I am really confident now and looking forward to the future,” he said.
Tracy Smith, Amer’s Remploy employment advisor, said: “Amer is really keen to inspire other people. He wants to let them know that there is help out there from companies like Remploy and he has such a bright career ahead of him in a job that he loves.”
