Staff from Remploy’s branch in Albion Street, Hull rolled up their sleeves and got to work at the Hull Foodbank.
A Humberside foodbank, which provides emergency food and support to local people in crisis, received a welcome boost when a team of volunteers from Remploy spent a day helping out at a food distribution centre in Hull.
The eight-strong team from Remploy’s branch in Albion Street, Hull rolled up their sleeves and got to work at the Hull Foodbank, sorting food and making sure it was in date.
The volunteering was part of Remploy’s ‘Be the Change’ scheme, which encourages employees to go out into the community to support charities and other organisations.
Claire Guynan, Remploy’s Hull branch manager said: “We worked our way through more than thirty food containers, each one holding up to forty products. We organised ourselves into a production line, sorting items into product types and preparing them for despatch. It was hard work and very different from our ‘day job’, but it was immensely satisfying.”
John Morris, volunteer co-ordinator of the Hull Foodbank, which distributes emergency food parcels to more than 170 people a week, thanked Remploy for its support.
He said: “The Remploy team did a fantastic job sorting food ready for distribution. We rely on volunteers to help us reach the people who are in need of our service, so Remploy’s support was very welcome.”
Remploy has a nationwide network of more than 60 branches, which last year found jobs for more than 18,500 disabled and disadvantaged people. Its branch in Hull provides a range of specialist employment support to disabled and disadvantaged job seekers, including confidence building, help searching for jobs online and advice on interview techniques.
