More than 30 disabled and disadvantaged job seekers in West Yorkshire have been given an opportunity to shine thanks to Remploy’s successful partnerships with Asda and City Facilities Management, the company contracted to clean Asda stores.
When Asda launched a recruitment drive to fill more than 300 job vacancies at a new store in Middleton, Leeds earlier this year, selecting Remploy to be one of its recruitment partners was an obvious move for the retailer.
The two organisations have been working together since 2005 and in that time more than 2,500 Remploy candidates, many with disabilities and health conditions have been supported into jobs at Asda stores across Britain.
“Remploy prepares candidates well and understands what Asda is looking for when recruiting colleagues.” said Katie Whewell, People Services Manager at the Middleton store, which opened in May
“Our aim is always to employ a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve and Remploy help us to achieve this. We are proud to work in partnership to recruit hard-working, conscientious and committed colleagues.”
Forty-seven candidates from Remploy branches in Leeds and Wakefield were chosen to attend ‘Asda Magic’ selection events after receiving support completing an online application form.
“Asda Magic gives us an opportunity to find out whether a person is right for the job, and allows applicants to find out what working at Asda is really like,” added Katie. “It provides an insight into our culture, our business and the role they are applying for.”
Fifteen candidates were offered permanent jobs and all have settled in at the Middleton store after receiving comprehensive on-the-job training.
Daniel Riley from Leeds is one of the new recruits. The 21-year-old, who has a learning disability, struggled to find a job before registering with Remploy for employment support.
“Remploy gave me so much help, they were brilliant,” he said. “I love my job working in the chilled foods section at Asda. Work is such an important part of your life and I’m delighted to have this great job. My target now is to progress to the next level.”
“The entire recruitment programme was a collaborative effort, with Leeds City Council also closely involved,” added Kathryn Aird, Remploy’s Account Manager in Leeds.
“As a result 15 people who were struggling to find work are now in sustainable jobs, meeting new people, making new friends and facing a much brighter future.”
Meanwhile, another 16 job seekers, who all received specialist employment support from Remploy, secured jobs with City Facilities Management, providing cleaning services in the new Asda store.
“Remploy’s support has been invaluable, not only throughout the recruitment process but also since the store opened,” said David Frayer, Cleaning Manager for City Facilities Manager.
“I know that if I need any specialist advice I only have to pick up the phone and ask.”
