Remploy, the UK’s leading provider of employment services for disabled people, last year delivered 18,500 job outcomes for disabled and disadvantaged people making more than 80,000 in last five years.

Latest figures show strong continued growth in numbers of people supported into work, particularly those with more severe disabilities or health conditions

Beth Carruthers, Remploy’s chief executive, said: “This wonderful achievement of supporting 82,500 people in the last five years is a tribute to the extensive relationships we have with employers and recognition that employing disabled people delivers real social and economic value.

“We are going from strength to strength and this year we anticipate passing the fantastic milestone of supporting into work more than 100,000 disabled and disadvantaged people in the last six years.”

“We listen to employers’ needs and help them to better understand and enjoy the benefits of employing disabled people, in effect transforming their businesses. As a result we achieve the Remploy mission as a social business of helping to transform the lives of tens of thousands of disabled people through sustainable employment.”

In the year to the end of March Remploy delivered more than 18,500 job outcomes for disabled and disadvantaged people, compared with 17,850 in the previous year, an increase of 4%. The number supported on the Government’s Work Choice programme for people with more severe disabilities or health conditions  increased by more than 7%.

Disabled people receive personalised training and support to build their confidence, help with CV writing and interview techniques at Remploy’s national network of more than 60 specialist recruitment branches and offices.

Coupled with the company’s strong relationships with employers, this ensure that the right person is found for the right job.

“When employers come to Remploy to fill their vacancies, they know that they are going to be interviewing well-prepared candidates. They tell us that employees who came to them from Remploy stay in the job longer and are less likely to take time off work,” said Ms Carruthers.

Work trials have proved to be an important element in helping disabled people into employment, particularly if they have been out work for long periods. An assessment of the social impact of Remploy’s activities showed that 74 per cent of individuals who did a work trial went on to gain employment.

The assessment also recorded that, using accepted calculations of the net gain to the Exchequer of a person leaving benefit and entering employment or retaining their job and staying off benefits, the annual economic saving to the state as a result of Remploy’s work would be £97m.

But Ms Carruthers added: “We recognise as a social business that Remploy is more than simply an economic entity, and that our work cannot be captured solely by hard numbers and financial results.

“It is important to understand the wider social impact of the Company’s activities and the benefits that our activities have on families, communities and society.

“Some of the programmes that Remploy delivers are relatively small in scale, but have a huge transformational impact. We work in partnership with local authorities, schools and colleges, employers and others to develop innovative ideas and break down barriers to employment.”
