A disabled East Kilbride man is celebrating being back in mainstream employment after working for the last 15 years as a warehouse assistant at Remploy’s Hillington factory.

50-year-old Iain Muir, who is profoundly deaf, has just started his new job as a warehouse operative at The Furnishing Service, an East Kilbride company that provides a furnishing and floor covering service to more than 60 local authorities and housing associations across Britain.

Iain decided to look for alternative employment opportunities after learning that Remploy’s site on Hillington Industrial Estate will close in March as part of the company’s modernisation programme. The programme will enable
Remploy to quadruple the number of disabled people it supports into mainstream employment to more than 20,000 a year by 2012.

“I saw the job at The Furnishing Service advertised in the local paper and thought I had the right transferable skills for the position, as it involves operating a fork truck to load and unload the lorries,” said Ian.

“I worked with my employment advisor, Bobby McGregor, to improve my CV, computer skills and interview technique and was thrilled to be offered the job as a result. Considering I’d been at Remploy for so long, making the transition to another employer has been very easy. My line manager can sign, which has helped me to settle in smoothly.

“I’m enjoying the job in general, especially having the opportunity to meet new people. My new colleagues are fantastic – they’re really friendly and helpful and lots of them are now keen to learn to sign!”
