Disabled job seekers in Cardiff on course to construct successful careers
22nd February 2008
Remploy, the UK’s leading provider of employment services for disabled people, is helping disabled jobseekers in the Cardiff area into fulfilling employment in the construction industry. The intensive three week course has been developed by Remploy, BTCV Cymru and recruitment firm SkyBlue, and was piloted at Remploy’s Cardiff recruitment branch. The course aims to increase employability by providing trainees with a variety of transferable skills and a qualification from the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).
And the pilot was such a success that the course has now been made a permanent offering at the Remploy recruitment branch, located in Golate Street.
The first week of training takes place in the branch and focuses on workplace skills such as punctuality, communication and confidence building. The final two weeks take place in the BTCV headquarters, where candidates complete theory and practical work to prepare them for the CSCS qualification - and ensure they are job ready.
Remploy’s Leila Middlehurst helped to develop the course. She said: “In devising the course we’ve had input from a variety of specialists, to ensure we are equipping candidates with all the necessary skills to gain a job within the growing construction industry in Wales.
“It is the practical experience that makes this course so special. By spending time on-site learning about risk assessments, first aid and manual handling, our candidates finish the course with an industry accredited qualification.
“Construction is big business across south Wales and it’s great that we’ve been able to link with a national company like SkyBlue to the benefit of employers and job seekers alike.”
Sarah Williams of BTCV added: “We work a lot with Remploy and various construction companies, so it was only natural that we should put a suitable training programme in place. It is BTCV’s aim to make sure that job seekers are not only ready to work but that they have all the skills they need to make a valuable contribution to the company they work for.”
Disabled job seekers and employers are invited to call in at the Cardiff branch, which is in Golate Street and is open from 9am to 5pm Monday – Friday, or to call 0845 155 2568.
