Disabled man secures 31-year contract with electronics specialist!

Brian Watson
A disabled man from Skelton is back in permanent work, thanks to the specialist employment services of Remploy working in partnership with Cleveland Technologies Group, whose Cleveland Circuits division on the Skelton Industrial Estate manufactures printed circuit boards.

33-year-old Brian Watson has anxiety and panic attacks and, five years ago, he had little choice but to resign from his job in the food industry when his health condition worsened. Several months later and keen to work, and having regained some self-confidence, he began job-hunting but without success. His search proved fruitless until he made contact with Remploy, which provides specialist employment services for people with disabilities and health conditions.

Remploy assisted Brian with developing a number of his key skills, including confidence building, interview techniques, communications skills and completing job application forms effectively. They also helped Brian appreciate the value of his existing skills, which included his lifelong hobby of creating intricate models of cars and buses. When Brian was interview by Cleveland Circuits, it was this ability that attracted their attention – the company produces complex printed circuit boards and relies on the attention to detail of its staff in the manufacturing process.

“The job is perfect for me,” said Brian. “Although I’ve been here for more than six months on several short term contracts, I’ve just heard today I’ve been made a permanent member of staff – so it’s a 31 year contract now!”

Brian now operates a wave soldering machine and is part of the assembly team for a number of Cleveland Circuits’ product lines, including electronic PCB boards that are used to control smoke alarms and fire detectors.
