Remploy helps Cardiff jobseekers map their steps to success

Joseph RamageThe programme, which includes a variety of specialist training workshops and activities, works with small groups of people - some of whom want to find employment for the first time in their lives. The aim is to increase their confidence in a fun and challenging environment.
Working to enhance disabled job seekers’ skills, the programme includes modules such as Overcoming Barriers, Dress to Impress, Acting Works and even indoor ‘rock climbing’. These activities break down the psychological barriers that can affect those who want to work. Also included is a module named ‘City Orienteering’, to tests candidates’ ability to travel independently and to encourage team working.
Kate Brain, manager of the Cardiff branch in Golate Street said: “Groups of jobseekers of varying abilities are given tasks to complete within specific timescales. One group were challenged to plan how to get to locations using public transport, manage a team lunch budget, and make comments on the customer service they received. It was a gentle introduction to the many steps they would have to take in the world of work and this has certainly set them off on the road to success.
“We often work with people who really want a job, but have such low confidence and haven’t undertaken tasks that many of us take for granted – like travelling on public transport.”
Joseph Ramage, 39 from Penylan, was one of the Remploy candidates who took part on the pilot scheme, he said:”The training we received was excellent – it certainly made a difference to my confidence. Working as part of a team was great and some of the activities certainly took me out of my comfort zone but now I know I can do things when I set my mind to them. I am really looking forward to continuing to work with Remploy so that I can make the leap from A to B and get a job”.
Ms Brain added: “The feedback we have received is extremely positive. It is clear that people prefer to undertake tasks in a group environment as they are with other people in the same situation.”
Following each pilot training programme, candidates are invited back to the branch where they will receive additional assistance with CV writing, job searching and completing application forms.
Disabled job seekers and employers are invited to call in at the Cardiff branch, which is open from 9am to 5pm Monday – Friday, or can call 0845 155 2568.
