Steve reaches new heights in charity challenge
28th March 2007
Steve JonesThe epic challenge saw Steve embarking on a gruelling nine-day climb and scaling some 5,940 metres to reach the summit of the Cotopaxi volcano in Ecuador, South America. The £3031 raised in sponsorship will be distributed between the two charities Reach and Steps, which provide support for children affected with hand or arm deficiency and lower limb abnormalities respectively.
Commenting on his fundraising endeavours, Steve said; “I’ve completed similar expeditions before, most recently Mount Everest base camp, but this was certainly a challenge. The last stage of the trek started just after midnight and it took eight hours of constant climbing up steep glaciers using crampons and ice axes to reach the summit. We were roped up to professional guides but there were still some pretty hairy moments, particularly as the high altitude made the air much thinner than normal and it was -32C in the wind! That said, it was a fantastic experience and I am delighted to have been able to raise much needed funds for two extremely deserving charities.”
Steve completed the trek as part of a team of 19, which in total raised a staggering £85K for both Steps and Reach. For more information about the charities and their work, please visit www.steps-charity.org.uk and www.reach.org.uk .
