First UK Bus on board with Remploy agreement
A pioneering agreement between First UK Bus, the UK’s largest bus operator and Remploy, the UK’s leading provider of specialist employment services for people experiencing complex barriers to work, will significantly increase the number of people with disabilities and health conditions working in the transport industry. At a celebratory event held at the Williams F1 conference centre in Oxfordshire on Friday May 30th, senior recruiting managers from First UK Bus met with Remploy and Jobcentre Plus colleagues to witness the formal signing of the agreement and discuss the requirements of the partnership. In recognition of all those disabled workers who have an integral part to play within First UK Bus, Justin Williams, a bus driver with First in Cymru was also invited to attend the event and sign the agreement. Justin (32) joined the business in November 2007 having worked previous to this as a volunteer classroom assistant for three years. Having experienced a serious accident, Justin was troubled with chronic leg problems and thought that his future work chances would be severely marred. With a steely determination, Justin approached Remploy and applied to First; with six months in the job Justin says his employment with First has “transformed my life”. He said; “I am very happy to be a bus driver and have learnt the job from some of the best people whilst being with First. The opportunity presented to me has made me more confident and has helped transform my life for the better. I have a regular route and customers and even though I have some health issues the job is delivered at all times to an exacting high professional standard. Being a bus driver is exactly what I wanted to do and Remploy and First both made this a reality.” Said Jim Dalton, human resources manager for First UK Bus: “We work hard to ensure that our transport network is barrier free and accessible for all. Equally, as one of the UK’s largest employers we recognise that a no barrier policy on employment opportunities does make a valuable contribution to peoples’ lives and to the economy. Our commitment is to provide those local job opportunities and equip people with the necessary skills and training to enable them to have a fulfilling career in public transport and with First. I am delighted to sign this partnership agreement with Remploy today; it marks the start of a mutually beneficial working relationship that will increase job opportunities for disabled people and for many others. This is good news for all." Stephen Dunn, Remploy’s corporate accounts manager added: “There are numerous misconceptions about disability and many employers are not yet embracing the valuable skills and abilities that people with disabilities and health conditions can bring to a business. “Think diversity and suddenly there’s a bigger workforce. There are not enough skilled workers in this country and yet there are more than a million disabled people able to work. Some of the UK’s biggest companies which partner with Remploy report that employing people with disabilities or health conditions has reduced their staff turnover by as much as 50 per cent. “First UK Bus realises that working with Remploy is not about being politically correct, it makes good business sense. We are delighted to have signed this agreement and hope it will support many people with disabilities and health conditions into employment.” New ways of working detailed in the agreement include First UK Bus providing details of all vacancies to Remploy, facilitating site visits and work trials for Remploy applicants and providing necessary training and adaptations for Remploy recruits joining the business. The new ways of working will be regularly monitored to ensure substantial results in terms of the number of successful candidates joining the business.
