Desmond engineers a new career.

Desmond, aged 39, had struggled to find a full-time job in the past due to negative perceptions about his dyslexia.

"I was on a Government training scheme for people who'd been unemployed for more than 18 months, when I discovered that I was eligible for support from Remploy," said Desmond.

"Remploy gave me advice on job applications, preparing a CV and interview skills, as well as helping to build my confidence and motivation. My employment advisor then helped me to search for the jobs I was interested in."

Remploy's support ultimately helped Desmond to secure his current role as a laptop engineer at London Laptops, a firm of computer engineers based at London Bridge. The job involves diagnosing and repairing problems with laptops and PCs, and Desmond is enjoying every minute of it.

"The job is great as it's a constant learning curve - no two problems are ever the same," he said. "It's a small, friendly company and the people I work with are great fun.

"It's also reassuring to know that I'm in a steady, permanent job, which means I can properly support my mother, who had a heart attack last year."

"Des is training still at the moment and his knowledge is progressing every day," said Wendy Judd, a Director at the company.

"He is always willing to learn and has shown great enthusiasm for his new role. He is punctual, conscientious, honest, kind and fits in well with all our other staff members and he makes me laugh with his bad puns!"
