Remploy helps Carl find his self-confidence - and a job!
After 26 years' out of work, 45 year old Carl Saunders from Bootle in Merseyside was sure of two things - that his disability and complete lack of confidence would mean no employer would ever offer him a job.
Carl was very wrong - as Remploy and Sainsbury's have now proved. All that was needed was for him to have the courage to walk through the doors of Remploy's recruitment branch in Liverpool city centre. That was the start of a process that has ended with Carl having a permanent job as a stock replenisher and trolley manager with the superstore - and he's loving every minute of it!
Remploy understood the issues that Carl perceived, and helped him overcome his lack of self-confidence. Ultimately, it was this, rather than Carl's Crohn's disease, that proved to be the biggest obstacle. Once Remploy's employment advisors had worked with Carl on key employment skills, including team work, interview techniques, CV writing and job searching, his self esteem grew immeasurably.
"Remploy helped me regain belief in myself, and as a result my life has changed completely," said Carl. "There's nobody more pleased than me that I can now pay my own way instead of relying on incapacity benefit."
Employment advisor, Claire Donnelly, who is based at Remploy's branch at Derby Square in Liverpool city centre, is amazed at Carl's transformation - he's now a confident, respected and valued colleague at Sainsbury's store. "Carl is rightly proud of his achievements, and I am delighted that we have played a part in him gaining his independence."
