Employer's guide to migraines
Migraine is a condition of recurring headaches – which happen again and again. The headaches may be linked with other symptoms, such as sensitivity to light and noise, nausea (feeling sick), vomiting (being sick), dizziness, and eyesight changes.
People who have migraine have an unusually sensitive nervous system that is particularly sensitive to change – causing painful, recurring headaches.
Impact of migraines
Employees with migraine may experience symptoms such as a throbbing, pulsating pain, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, nausea, pain and/or numbness on one side, vision changes, blurred vision or vertigo.
Supporting staff with migraines
Flexible working will allow the employee to manage their condition. For example, they may find it easier to work later in the day than early mornings.
- Contact Access to Work for advice on the suitability of their work station.
- Provide the employee with a dark, private area to go to when experiencing a migraine.
- Add fluorescent light filters to existing fluorescent lights to create a more natural lighting where appropriate.
- Discuss what environmental triggers affect the employee and how to minimise them.
Useful information about migraines
You might need to make some adjustments to help your employees. These could include specialist equipment like chairs and IT equipment. Grants are available through Access to Work (external site) to help to cover the cost of items that are identified as necessary to support employees who are disabled or have a health condition.
