Employers may offer different types of contracts and it’s important that you understand what each type means

  • Permanent -  a job with no set end date.
  • Temporary or fixed term contracts - jobs with a set end date. A lot of recruitment agencies will offer temporary roles that can last for anything from a few hours to a few months. Some roles may have the potential to become permanent if you do well but there is no guarantee of this.

There are benefits to both permanent and temporary roles. Long term, permanent jobs give you security and peace of mind but temporary roles can give more flexibility if you decide you don’t enjoy what you’re doing. Be aware that if you claim benefits taking a temporary role could impact on what benefits you are entitled to.
