New job has Verna jumping for joy


"Remploy was brilliant in helping me prepare for job interviews"

Verna McKenley was 23 and working as a clerical officer for Camden Council when she discovered she had dyslexia. “The Council was very helpful and arranged for me to attend a dyslexia group at a local college, ”said Verna who enjoyed a 24-year career at the Council until she was made redundant in 2011.

“I was out of work for two years, although I wasn’t really looking for employment in the first year. But when I did register for work I hated signing on. It brought back bad memories of being unemployed when I was 17,” she said.

Verna was referred to Remploy’s Waterloo branch in London for specialist support with her job searching, including advice on interview techniques and creating a CV that highlighted her skills and abilities to potential employers.

The help paid off when she was one of 13 Remploy candidates offered jobs at a new Sainsbury’s Local store in Blackfriars, south London. “I had two interviews for the job, both in the familiar surroundings of Remploy’s Waterloo branch, which really helped me relax,” said Verna, who is now working as a customer assistant at the busy store.

“Remploy was brilliant in helping me prepare for my interviews and making sure I knew what Sainsbury’s looks for in its employees. I was jumping for joy when I heard I had got the job.  Being out of work was very difficult for me because I love keeping busy. However, I now have a job that I love, helping customers and meeting different people every day. I can’t thank Remploy and Sainsbury’s enough. Nils Bendle, a recruitment advisor at Remploy’s Waterloo branch added: “Verna was like a sponge soaking up everything I told her.

She deserves her success. I’m delighted for her and the other 12 Remploy candidates who now have jobs at Sainsbury’s new store in Blackfriars. Nationally, Remploy’s partnership with Sainsbury’s has helped more than 2,000 disabled and disadvantaged people in to work with the retail giant.
