A Glasgow man with dreams of getting into construction has secured a placement as a quantity surveyor with help from Remploy, the UK’s leading provider of specialist disability employment services.
Liam Taggart, aged 31, is hard of hearing and was supported into the ‘Think Differently’ construction work placement with Mitie by the Remploy Glasgow branch.
Mitie’s property services division has recently secured funding from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) to deliver the ‘Think Differently’ project under which the company provides invaluable work experience opportunities, training and mentoring for more than 60 disabled candidates.
Liam started his placement with Mitie in September 2016 and said that things are “going well”. He added: “The team at Remploy knew that the Mitie work placements were coming up and thought that an opportunity there would be suitable for me.
“Being hard of hearing can make learning and socialising as part of a group difficult for me,” said Liam who wears a cochlear implant and can lip read and prefers one-to-one interaction. He added: “At the moment, being with Mitie is all about getting experience and hopefully I will eventually get a job. I have a mentor at Mitie who I am job shadowing to learn more about the job I am doing with them.”
Janet Back, Lead Employment Advisor for Remploy Glasgow said: “Liam was identified as a suitable candidate to go on a Mitie placement out of 25 potential candidates. I have spoken to him recently and he is really enjoying his time with Mitie at their Govan site. Liam has settled in well to his placement with Mitie and had an interpreter with him on day one to support him but he only required the interpreter for one day because of the one-to-one nature of his placement. Liam has been assisting the property surveying team with many tasks including entering details on the system used by payroll and helping to set up contracts.”
Alistair Farquhar, Liam’s Manager at Mitie said: "Liam has done very well during his placement. I believe he is enjoying the experience and is becoming more and more involved as he spends more time with us. From my perspective, the ‘Think Differently’ partnership with Remploy is proving to be a big success and provides a great opportunity for both the candidates and the company to demonstrate what can be achieved."
