“More than six years later I’m still here and loving it”

Fraser Innes’s job prospects were on hold when he signed up with Remploy, the disability employment specialist, in January 2009.

The 26-year-old from Nottingham, who was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was five, was tired of the short-term, going nowhere jobs he had been doing since leaving college. But he needed expert guidance on how to get a permanent role that matched his talents.

“It was my mum and dad who advised me to go to my local Remploy branch,” said Fraser. “And I’m pleased they did, because it led to me getting a job with McDonald’s. More than six years later I’m still here and loving it.”

“My nerves would always get the better of me at interviews,” he explained. “It was a big problem that was preventing me clearing the final hurdle in my quest for a job. “However, my advisors at Remploy didn’t give up on me. They showed me ways in which I could conquer my nervousness and tell employers what I was capable of achieving, given an opportunity.”

At Remploy’s branch in Nottingham city centre, Fraser received tailored one-to-one support, including advice on building a standout CV, confidence building and, crucially, interview techniques.

The support paid off when Fraser got a job at McDonald’s Castle Marina restaurant in Nottingham. Remarkably, he is now the third-longest serving crew member at the busy restaurant and frequently puts his experience to good use, mentoring new recruits.

“Fraser is calm and patient, which makes him an ideal person to guide new team members,” said Morissa Brimm, business manager at the restaurant. “He is also passionate and determined to succeed, two important qualities that McDonald’s looks for in its employees.”
