“Remploy prepares candidates well and understands what Asda is looking for”

More than 30 disabled and disadvantaged people in West Yorkshire have been given a chance to shine thanks to Remploy’s flourishing partnerships with Asda and City Facilities Management, the company contracted to clean Asda stores.

When Asda launched a recruitment drive to fill more than 300 job vacancies at a new store in Middleton, Leeds, it chose Remploy to be one of its recruitment partners. The two organisations have successfully worked together since 2005 and in that time more than 2,500 Remploy candidates, many with disabilities and health conditions, have been supported into jobs at Asda stores across Britain.

“Remploy prepares candidates well and understands what Asda is looking for when recruiting colleagues.” said Katie Whewell, People Services Manager at the Middleton store. “Our aim is always to employ a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve and Remploy help us to achieve this. We are proud to work in partnership to recruit hard-working, conscientious and committed colleagues.”

After successfully negotiating a rigorous selection process, 15 Remploy candidates were offered permanent jobs at the new store and received comprehensive on-the-job training. 

Daniel Riley from Wakefield is one of the new recruits. The 21-year-old, who has a learning disability, struggled to find a job before registering with Remploy for specialist employment support. 

“Remploy gave me so much help, they were brilliant,” he said. “I love my job working in the chilled foods section. Work is such an important part of your life and I’m delighted to have this great job at Asda. My target now is to progress to the next level.”  

“The entire recruitment programme was a collaborative effort, with Leeds City Council also closely involved,” added Kathryn Aird, Remploy’s account manager in Leeds. “As a result 15 people who were struggling to find work are now in sustainable jobs, meeting new people and making new friends.”

Meanwhile, another 16 Remploy candidates secured jobs with City Facilities Management, providing cleaning services in the new Asda store.

“Remploy’s support has been invaluable, not only throughout the recruitment process but also since the store opened,” said David Frayer, cleaning manager for City Facilities Manager. “I know that if I need any specialist advice I only have to pick up the phone and ask.”
