Giuseppe Scarafile was supported by Remploy to find and, more importantly, retain his role.

Thirty-eight-year-old Giuseppe or Gip as he is known, lost a leg in a motorcycle accident 20 years ago. In March 1996, Remploy supported him into work at the New Covent Garden Food Company in Peterborough.

"Gip is a very independent person but was rather overdoing it when he started work," explains Remploy employment advisor Ian Kearsley. "He needed some advice on how to slow down but still continue working."

Together with Gip and his employers, Ian arranged for Gip's contracted hours to be reduced, for him to be redeployed to a less physically demanding role and added to his part-time earnings with working tax credit. Gip is now happy in a role working in the labeling room of the sauce plant.

Production manager Les Down said: "We really thought that we might lose Gip but Ian has done a great job in turning things around and Gip hasn't looked back since."
