Leicester College is an inclusive College working with many different learner groups. We have a dedicated department, Continuing Studies, which provides discrete learning opportunities for young people and adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. Continuing Studies supports around 200 learners with varying difficulties and disabilities across three programme areas. The Learning for Living area supports learners to develop independent and work skills where appropriate. Learners are given opportunities to develop skills through work environments such as lunch clubs. The area has also recently been extremely successful in a joint project with a charity called Saffron Acres and the Midlands Cooperative Society where learners worked in a manufacturing environment to produce jams and chutneys which were sold in Midland Cooperative stores across the East Midlands. (See http://saffron.midlands.coop/ ) The Learning for Work area provides opportunities for working with young people with learning disabilities to gain the right skills to gain employment. We currently have a number of courses which provide a progression route to our supported Internships where learners are out in the work environment full time. We currently have nearly 30 learners on our Internships which are delivered in collaboration with Remploy. Continuing Studies has also previously worked with JCP clients with LD to provide short training courses in employability skills. Our top three strengths: 1. We have existing infrastructure (experienced staff and support systems) as well as a positive track record to support this client group. 2. Our provision can be flexible to mutually suit the needs of the individual as well as for a particular contract/project. 3. We have excellent links with local organisations with whom we work with to enhance the learning experience for this client group.
