A disabled Hull man, who experienced a year's unemployment whilst applying for countless jobs, is back in work thanks to the professional guidance he's received from Remploy.
Gary Hunt, who's 42 and lives in Bransholme, has a learning disability and dyslexia. Since leaving his last job, he has tried relentlessly to persuade employers to give him a chance. However a referral to Remploy's Hull branch on Albion Street, which supports people with disabilities and health conditions, has quickly paid dividends. He's just been appointed a professional cleaner with City Facilities Management, the company contracted to maintain ASDA's facilities to the highest standards, and is now working at the supermarket's Mount Pleasant store in Hull.
Gary attended a course that Remploy had specially designed to help him write an effective CV, build his confidence and enhance his interview skills. Remploy also provided professional training in industrial and retail cleaning techniques, and demonstrated what employers in the professional cleaning sector would look for in their prospective employees. Armed with this array of knowledge, Gary impressed the interview panel and has just been appointed to his new position.
"I already had other NVQ certificates, but was open to learning new skills," said Gary. "Remploy encouraged me to broaden my outlook and consider jobs in different areas of work, and it was this that finally led to my success."
Gary now works full time and is always happy when overtime is available. "Having no job really made me feel depressed. I am outgoing and like to meet and help people, and working at ASDA means I am able to do exactly this," he said.
